Disagreement, contrasting viewpoints, and even non-violent conflict are inevitable in a pluralistic
society. When not handled well, the costs of contentious conversations can be high, with
increased misunderstanding leading to higher levels of polarization and “othering.” However,
peacefully managing tough conversations is essential for a societal trust, a healthy democracy and compassionate communities.
UR Action’s proven ABCs of Constructive Conversation framework helps participants turn
difficult conversations into powerful opportunities to strengthen relationships, increase mutual understanding and trust, and bring communities together.
This highly participatory workshop (available in both a 90-minute or 120-minute format) equips
participants to:
• Spot unproductive patterns of communication and practice engaging in more balanced
and productive conversations centered on active listening.
● Learn and apply a proven strategy (ABCs of Constructive Conversation) for
communicating effectively in the face of disagreement, conflict, and strong emotions
● Learn to raise, rather than avoid, difficult topics and engage in constructive conversation
Each of the following interactive modules engages participants in exercises, reflection, and
group discussion:
- ABCs of Constructive Conversation:
Guidance on the Four Skills we can use in conversation and how to find an appropriate balance among them. - Active Listening
Exercise: In pairs or groups of 3s, participants practice Asking open-ended questions and Checking their understanding of different views, and then get feedback from a peer on how they do. - Fun Engagement on Relevant Topics:
Through an interactive and engaging “Vote with Your Feet” exercise, participants practice applying the ABCs organically with people who have different views on topics that are important to them.
Offered in-person or virtually, this workshop helps participants engage constructively across
difference, contributing to healthier communities.
